Ephedra gerardiana

Vernacular Name:Somlataa, Kaagh charo


English Name:Ephedra


Distribution:Afghanistan, Karakoram, Himalaya (Kashmir to Bhutan) 


Parts used:Whole plant

 

Description: Shrub; branches short, slender, Leaves reduced to opposite, membranous scales. Flowers minute, 1-sexual, cone-like spikes, male and female spikes on separate plants; male spikes solitary or few , crowded, female cones 1-2-fid and solitary.

 

Use: Liquid extract is used to control asthmatic paroxysms. Its tincture is cardiac and circulatory stimulant; stem and root decoction is a remedy for rheumatism and syphilis; also used in fever due to common cold, blood pressure, and cuts. Fruits are considered digestive. Plant juice is a cardiac stimulant; also useful in respiratory diseases, asthma, hay fever. Squeezed plant is mixed with bathing water to treat skin diseases.

 

Application: Liquid extract, tincture, decoction, paste
